Irish man dies in New York construction accident

An Irish man has died in New York city after part of a crane fell on top of him on Friday.

The man has been named locally as 40-year-old Trevor Loftus.

It is understood Mr Loftus owned a construction company and worked between New York and west Limerick over the past two years.

The New York Fire Department told RTÉ News the incident happened at 11.30am (4.30pm Irish time) at 219 East 44th Street in Manhattan.

They said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The NYFD also said an investigation is under way as to why part of the crane malfunctioned and fell.

Mr Loftus is survived by is his wife and two children who live in Croagh, Co Limerick.

Local councillor Stephen Keary said his death has "shocked the community" as they "try to get their heads around the whole event".

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of the incident and it will provide consular assistance if requested.
